Gaudí: Güell Crypt

Tours in Barcelona with licensed Guides

The Güell Colony is a sample of XIX century textile industrial colony and not far away of Barcelona. It,s a cultural Heritage of the city , Eusebi Güell, the industrialist who founded the Colònia Güell, thought to create an industrial colony where the workers would have access to education, culture and recreation, and where they would live in single-family homes as opposed to the dense apartment blocks that were common in other colonies. As a patron of culture, Güell built the school, the teacher’s house, the Athenaeum, the Fontova theatre, the church and the parish centre, all of which were conceived as buildings at the service of the people of the Colony. Architects belonging to the Art Nouveau, or “Modernista” movement as it was called in Catalonia, some of whom were collaborators of Gaudí, took part in the construction of these buildings.

The construction of the church was made by Antoni Gaudí, he only concluded the Crypt, one of 5 works of the architect declared World Heritage Sites.

Our route includes a stroll by the streets of the colony explaining the different buildings and a visit inside the crypt.

Coming back to the city we will arrive to Paseo De Gracia, one of the most important avenues in Barcelona, where we can find luxury shops, and also very interesting modernism buildings. If you wish to continue visiting Gaudí,s buildings here you have the opportunity with Batlló House and Mila House, known as “La Pedrera”.
